Use AI honestly in school and college

Lesson 5 of 55 min read1 task · 3 questions

AI can help you learn. It must not do your work for you. Say how you used it.

The idea

Using AI to learn is help. Asking it to explain a topic, quiz you or point out mistakes in your draft is like asking a tutor. Using AI to do the work and handing it in as yours is cheating. Copying an AI essay is the same as copying a friend's essay.

Your school's or college's rules come first. Some teachers allow AI for ideas. Some do not allow it at all. If you are not sure, ask your teacher before you start. Teachers: tell students your rule in writing, so nobody has to guess.

When you do use AI, say so. Add a short AI use note: which tool, what you used it for, and what you did yourself. This is honest, and it protects you.

AI can be wrong. Check every fact, date and number in your textbook or another trusted source before you submit.

Your task

Write a short AI use note for an assignment

Change the assignment and what you did. Use a placeholder, not your real name or roll number. Paste the prompt.

Help me write a short AI use note to attach to my assignment.

Assignment: a 500-word essay on saving water in cities.
What I used AI for: ChatGPT (free plan) suggested an outline, and explained the difference between groundwater and surface water.
What I did myself: I wrote all the paragraphs. I chose my own examples from my city.
What I checked: two facts, in my Geography textbook.

Rules: Write it in first person. Under 80 words. Honest and plain. Use [Student name] and [Class] as placeholders. Do not make my use of AI sound smaller or bigger than it was.

What you should get

A real example of a good result. Your wording will differ a little. The shape and the facts should match.

AI use note

I used ChatGPT (free plan) for this essay in two ways. First, it suggested an outline. Second, it explained the difference between groundwater and surface water. I wrote all the paragraphs myself. I chose my own examples from my city. I checked two facts in my Geography textbook. I did not copy any text from the AI into this essay.
