Summarise a long document without losing the key points
Read 20 pages in 3 minutes, then check the parts that matter.
The idea
For long files, use a tool that works from your own document. Google's Gemini Notebook (it used to be called NotebookLM) has a free plan. You upload a PDF or paste text, and it answers only from that source. It also shows which part of the source each answer came from.
Whatever tool you use, ask for the same four things: the main point, what I must do, deadlines or numbers, and what is unclear.
Do not upload confidential files to a free tool unless your company allows it. When in doubt, use a sample or ask your IT team.
Your task
Summarise a leave policy in 4 lines
This sample policy is short so you can test the prompt. With a real document, upload it to Gemini Notebook and use the same prompt.
Summarise the policy below for an employee. Output exactly: 1. Main point (1 line) 2. What I must do (up to 3 bullets) 3. Dates and numbers (bullets) 4. What is unclear (bullets; write "Nothing" if clear) Policy text: "Employees get 18 days of paid leave each year. Leave must be requested at least 3 working days before the start date, except for emergencies. Unused leave, up to 6 days, can be carried over to the next year. Leave for more than 5 days in a row needs the manager's written approval. The leave year runs from 1 April."
What you should get
A real example of a good result. Your wording will differ a little. The shape and the facts should match.
Printed resultExample
